Ipamorelin: FDA status and human studies
Heads up: Peptide Clarity Guide works with partners, and a few buttons below pay us if you join (you pay the same). Who pays plays no part in the order here, or in what we write. How we earn.
The short answer
Ipamorelin is an experimental ghrelin-receptor agonist without FDA approval. Current records do not establish a routine commercial compounding pathway. FDA advisers voted against listing two forms, and the 503B Category 2 record concerns safety rather than permission. A short hormone study and a postoperative trial do not establish benefits for muscle, sleep, height or anti-aging use.
Definition
Ipamorelin is a five-amino-acid peptide that activates the ghrelin receptor to release growth hormone. Research code NNC 26-0161. Not approved by FDA for any use.
Key facts
| Fact | Detail |
|---|---|
| What kind of drug | Ghrelin-receptor agonist, part of the GHRP family |
| FDA-approved? | Never |
| Can a 503A pharmacy compound it? | No. It's not on the bulks list and sits in no 503A category[2] |
| Advisory committee vote | 0 yes, 12 no, 1 abstain for each of two forms (October 29, 2024)[6] |
| Outsourcing facilities (503B) | Listed in Category 2, substances that may present significant safety risks[3] |
| Human studies | One hormone study in healthy men, one phase 2 surgical trial[8] |
Compare the current regulatory limits with the actual study endpoints before considering an offer. The results-timeline guide separates hormone changes from clinical benefits, and the source finder links the cited records.
Ipamorelin is a ghrelin mimic that was never approved
Ipamorelin belongs to the GHRP family, short for growth-hormone-releasing peptides. It works on the ghrelin receptor, the same switch your hunger hormone flips. That's a different door from sermorelin, which copies the hormone GHRH.
It was developed in the 1990s as a drug candidate. In rat and pig studies it released growth hormone without the cortisol spike that older GHRPs caused [7]. That selectivity is why it gets talked about. In healthy men, one IV infusion produced a single short growth hormone pulse, and the drug cleared with a half-life of about 2 hours [8]. It never made it through to an approved drug.
FDA closed the compounding door in 2024
Pharmacies that mix drugs for individual patients (503A pharmacies) can use an ingredient three ways. It has a USP monograph, it's part of an FDA-approved drug, or it's on FDA's bulks list. FDA's briefing for the 2024 meeting says ipamorelin has no monograph and isn't part of any approved drug [5]. And it isn't on the list.
| Date | What happened | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| September 18, 2024 | Federal Register notice schedules an advisory committee review of both forms [4] | A formal public review was set |
| September 19, 2024 | The pharmacies that nominated it withdraw their nominations [6] | No one was left asking FDA to allow it |
| October 29, 2024 | Advisory committee votes 0-12-1 against listing the free base and 0-12-1 against the acetate [6] | 12no votes and1abstention for each form |
| Now | Still in 503B Category 2; in no 503A category [3] [2] | No routine commercial pathway established |
The advisory vote is distinct from a final FDA rule. Current503A and 503B records and the statutory ingredient requirements must be read separately.
The September 27, 2024 removal trips people up. Some pages read it as ipamorelin being cleared. It wasn't. It left Category 2 because nobody was nominating it anymore, and the committee then voted against it a month later.
The human research is thin, and the one real trial missed
The selected reports below include animal pharmacology, healthy-volunteer hormone measurements and postoperative efficacy research. Their populations, routes and endpoints differ from commercial wellness offers.
| Study | Who | What it found |
|---|---|---|
| Raun 1998 [7] | Rat cells, rats and pigs (no people) | Released growth hormone as strongly as GHRP-6, with no meaningful cortisol or ACTH rise |
| Gobburu 1999 [8] | Healthy men, 8 per dose level, one IV infusion | A single short growth hormone pulse; the drug's half-life was about 2 hours |
| Beck 2014 [9] | 117 enrolled;114 in safety/modified-intention-to-treat populations after bowel surgery | Time to first tolerated meal: 25.3 vs 32.6 hours on placebo (p=0.15, not significant) |
The postoperative trial enrolled 117 people; 114 entered the safety and modified-intention-to-treat analyses. It did not show a statistically significant difference on the key or secondary efficacy analyses. FDA also discussed two fatal postoperative complications in treated participants, with uncertain drug relatedness. These findings cannot establish either the risks or benefits of repeated home injections in healthy adults [9] [5].
| Event | Ipamorelin | Placebo |
|---|---|---|
| High blood sugar at discharge | 14.3% | 8.6% |
| Low potassium | 12.5% | 3.4% |
| Serious adverse events (infection, leak, readmission) | 17.9% | 15.5% |
| Deaths | 2 patients | No placebo deaths described in the cited FDA account |

FDA identifies a lack of essential safety information for other injectable routes. Its briefing also describes a report of two months of subcutaneous ipamorelin plus sermorelin followed by joint pain. The combination and spontaneous-report limitations prevent attribution to ipamorelin or an incidence estimate. Reported exposure is different from controlled safety evidence; the cited brief IV studies do not establish long-term subcutaneous safety for a healthy person [3] [5].
By goal: controlled benefit remains unestablished
Goal first. Here's what people want from ipamorelin and what the human record says. Each row points to the page that goes deeper.
| Your goal | Human evidence | Go deeper |
|---|---|---|
| Muscle or body composition | No applicable controlled benefit established | Body composition shortlist |
| Sleep or recovery | No applicable controlled sleep benefit established | Sleep and recovery shortlist |
| Results over time | No applicable controlled outcome timeline | What a results timeline can and can't show |
| Height | No applicable clinical height benefit established | Talk to a pediatric endocrinologist for a child's growth |
| Testosterone | No isolated ipamorelin testosterone benefit established | What a related peptide, sermorelin, does to testosterone |
The cited hormone and postoperative findings do not establish the advertised changes in muscle, sleep, height or aging. A measurable GH response is not a clinical outcome for these goals. A separate registered observational program lists ipamorelin among several hormonal and other interventions in veterans. The record reports fifty-two participants and no posted results; it cannot isolate ipamorelin’s effect, route or safety, and registration alone does not establish authorization for a commercial product [1].
Pairing it with other peptides doesn't create a route
A blend with CJC-1295 requires separate assessment of both ingredients. The 2024 advisory recommendations did not themselves create or remove a compounding pathway. Nor does adding sermorelin or tesamorelin establish authorization, safety or efficacy for the mixture. No applicable controlled combination evidence was identified.
Why you still see it online, and what the labels mean
A product labeled research-use-only is not thereby an approved medicine or authorized clinical study. Verify the actual preparation, manufacturer, prescriber, pharmacy and applicable authorization; do not infer human-use quality from a marketing label [10].
FDA’s concerns about aggregation, peptide-related impurities and unnatural amino acids address the substance and preparation, not merely a vendor’s label. A purported pharmacy or laboratory designation does not resolve those concerns or establish a safety rate [3].
You'll also see the 503B listing quoted out of context. Category 2 for outsourcing facilities is a warning list, not a permission. It tells large compounders that FDA sees significant safety risks in the ingredient [3].
- "Research use only" on the label: not authorization for treatment of people.
- A clinic offering it by prescription: ask which pharmacy makes it and under which rule. Ask for the precise claimed regulatory pathway.
- "FDA removed it from Category 2": true for 503A in September 2024, because nominations were withdrawn. The advisory vote against it came a month later.
No US pharmacy route exists today
An ordinary prescription does not replace the requirements for an ingredient or route. Authorized research and applicable expanded access follow a distinct framework; registry listing alone is not authorization. Read the detailed regulatory guide [10].
What a prescriber can offer instead
The separate sermorelin guide covers its GHRH mechanism, former approved uses and limited adult studies. That history does not establish that it is an appropriate substitute or authorize an ipamorelin-containing mixture.
Tesamorelin comes up a lot as well. It's FDA-approved as the brand Egrifta for one narrow use, belly fat in adults with HIV-associated lipodystrophy. FDA regulates it as a biologic, so pharmacies can't compound it either. It isn't an easy swap. If body composition is the real goal, start with the body composition shortlist and bring these questions to your visit:
- Which pharmacy makes the product, and is the ingredient legal for that pharmacy to use?
- What lab values will you check before and during treatment?
- What result would tell us it isn't working?

Can you get ipamorelin or CJC-1295 legally? What FDA's record says
Neither peptide has a lawful pharmacy route today. Here's the dated record, and what a prescriber can offer instead.
How long CJC-1295 and ipamorelin take to work: what is actually known
Week-by-week timelines for this pair are everywhere. The cited studies do not establish such a response timetable. Here's what the hormone research does show.
Sermorelin and ipamorelin: evidence and compounding limits
The pairing is popular online. The cited studies do not establish the pair, and ipamorelin does not qualify for ordinary US compounding exemptions.
Tesamorelin and ipamorelin together: untested and not legally compounded
The pairing shows up on clinic menus and in paid promotional posts. Here's what's actually known, and why a pre-mixed blend has nowhere legal to come from.
Frequently asked
- Is ipamorelin legal?
- It is not FDA-approved, and current cited records do not establish a routine commercial compounding pathway. Authorized research or applicable expanded access is distinct from retail prescribing; a research-use label or registry listing alone is insufficient.
- How much does ipamorelin cost?
- This guide does not quote a routine commercial prescription price because an eligible pathway is not established by the cited records. A laboratory-vial price is not a quote for approved treatment.
- Can ipamorelin make you taller?
- The cited studies do not establish height benefit. A child’s growth concerns require assessment by an appropriate clinician rather than extrapolation from a brief adult hormone study.
- Does ipamorelin help sleep?
- The selected human hormone and postoperative studies do not establish sleep benefit from commercial preparations. No applicable controlled evidence for that claim was identified.
- Is ipamorelin the same as CJC-1295?
- No. Ipamorelin acts at the ghrelin receptor; CJC-1295 is a GHRH analog. A marketed blend does not establish that either ingredient is authorized or clinically effective for the claimed goal.
- How does ipamorelin differ from sermorelin?
- They act through different receptors and have different regulatory histories and clinical evidence. Sermorelin’s former approved uses do not approve an ipamorelin product or establish combination safety.
