In a sentence: NMN has real but narrow evidence and is no longer categorically excluded from supplements. That does not verify every commercial bottle or establish an anti-aging benefit. The confusing part is the regulatory back-and-forth, so here it is with dates.
Is NMN FDA-approved?
No. NMN isn't an approved drug, and supplements aren't approved by FDA before they're sold.
Under the 1994 supplement law, makers are responsible for checking the safety and labeling of their own products before marketing [1]. FDA can act against a bad product after it reaches the market. So "FDA-approved NMN" on a label is a claim you should treat with suspicion.
Why NMN was "banned", and what changed
In 2022 FDA concluded NMN was excluded from the supplement definition because it had been authorized for study as a new drug before it was sold as a supplement [2]. That rule, sometimes called the race to market, stops a drug ingredient from being sold as a supplement once drug research claims it first.
Industry groups submitted petitions in 2023. On September 29, 2025, FDA answered the petitions and concluded NMN is not excluded [5] [6]. The FDA petition response explains the evidence that NMN was sold as a supplement first [7].
| Date | Event | Source |
|---|---|---|
| October 11, 2022 | FDA letter says NMN is excluded from the supplement definition | FDA later response recounts the earlier interpretation [2] |
| March 9, 2023 | Natural Products Association and Alliance for Natural Health USA petition FDA | FDA-2023-P-0872 [3] |
| May 10, 2023 | Council for Responsible Nutrition petitions FDA | FDA-2023-P-1867 [4] |
| September 29, 2025 | FDA responses: NMN is not excluded from the supplement definition | FDA-2023-P-0872 and FDA-2023-P-1867 [5] [6] |
Why you still read that NMN is banned
Many pages were written between 2022 and 2025, when FDA's exclusion stood, and were never updated. Some still say FDA "barred" NMN. That was true for about three years. It isn't the current position.
A bottle being available for sale does not establish compliance. Ingredient exclusion, product safety, labeling and disease claims are separate questions. The current FDA response resolves the exclusion question; it does not approve individual supplements [5].
Heads up: the history may not be over. FDA can revisit a position if new facts come in, so check the date on any status claim you read.
Is NMN a scam?
No, but it's oversold. NMN reliably raises blood NAD in trials, and the benefits people buy it for aren't established.
| Study | Who and how long | Main result | Who ran it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yoshino 2021 [8] | Postmenopausal women with prediabetes and overweight, 10 weeks | Muscle insulin sensitivity rose | University team; two authors hold NMN-related patent interests |
| Yi 2023 [9] | 80 healthy middle-aged adults, 60 days | Blood NAD rose; six-minute walk improved; insulin resistance unchanged | Industry-run (an NMN maker) |
| Morifuji 2024 [10] | 60 older adults, 12 weeks | Main test (stepping) unchanged; walking speed and sleep scores better as secondary results | Authors employed by a food company |
| Pencina 2023 [11] | 32 adults aged 55 to 80 with overweight, 14 days | Blood NAD rose with dose; side effects like placebo | Metro International Biotech co-authors |
The pattern is consistent. NAD goes up. Function results are a mix of small wins and misses, and the longest trial in this table lasted three months. These results do not establish an aging or lifespan benefit. For the full evidence picture, see does NMN work.
Is NMN safe?
The selected short trials generally report good tolerability [9] [10] [11]. These small trials do not establish safety over years or exclude uncommon harms.
If you have a health condition or take other medicines, ask your clinician before starting. The full safety rundown lives at is NMN safe.
How to tell a legit NMN product
Because FDA doesn't check supplements before sale, the NMN on the label is only as good as the maker's testing [1]. A few checks help.
- Third-party testing. Look for a seal from an outside testing program, not just the brand's own claim.
- A lot-specific certificate of analysis. It should match the lot number on your bottle and show NMN content and purity.
- No disease claims. Supplements can't legally claim to treat or cure disease. A label that promises to reverse aging or treat diabetes is a warning sign.
- Plain ingredient list. Know what else is in the capsule, and check it against your other supplements.

NMN vs NAD+ injections
NMN is an oral supplement. NAD+ injections are compounded prescriptions under a different FDA status: NAD+ sits in Category 1 under evaluation, subject to conditional interim enforcement policy rather than approval [12].
